New series Sea Pictures — Production begins in Normandy

Date: 19.12.2025

Production of the new photographic series Sea Pictures has recently commenced on the Atlantic coast of Normandy, France. Part of the studio's broader research field/project The Act of Looking, the series is devoted to the phenomenology of the gaze — examining the conditions under which everyday spectacles (fire, construction sites, water) and more specific obsessions (the ocean at night, highways seen from bridges) trigger what the practice terms "deep looking".

Shot directly on the French shoreline, the work deliberately withholds faces, focusing entirely on the posture of contemplation. Figures stand at the water's edge, their attention directed toward something that remains structurally inaccessible to the viewer. The result stages a central paradox: what you look at is not always what you see. Whether these gazes are directed outward toward the sea or inward toward memory cannot be determined — and that indeterminacy is the work's subject.
